Daniel's letter to his Granddad

Dear Grandad Here we are, who'd have thought it? YOu and me, the family on the last page of your book. I know one thing - it's been a blast! I don't think that some people even know each of their grandparents, but I was lucky. I knew all four of mine and I wouldn't be without any one of them for the world. I have a unique and different relationship with every single one of them, which is something can be rarely found in people. I look back now and think about what our relationship was like and I know one thing, we were close. I'm glad we were, you taught me so much over the past seventeen and a bit years of knowing you and, and I can't imagine what life is going to be like without you. Some particular highlights include your 'bloody marvellous' chips and your constant reminders of putting the TV remote back in its place, because 'it doesn't live over there, it lives here.' I think a lot of people who have known you throughout your entire life will know of you famous sayings, which were iconic to you. I don't think the words 'bloody hell' or 'lor luvaduck' will ever feel used correctly again. Among some of the thing you've taught me through my life include: how to correctly make coffee (after that bloody awful one I made, which I don't think anyone has let go of yet) and also let's not forget photography. Many people will know your incredible passion for photography, which was an iconic thinkg to you again. You are the reason I love photography. You have taught me so much about it and I won't forget that knowledge. I will keep going with it to the best of my ability and I will use the tips that you have given me. I think that we have had a lot of fond memories together, not just the two of us, but the family as well. Finding out about your illness only a couple of months ago seem very frightening to say the least, but once again you've been an inspiration to us all, you battled stubbornly and you weren't taken without a fight. You even retained your world class sense of humour during this difficult time; which is not something that I think I would have the ability to do if I was in your situation, but then again that sums you up, a truly one off wonderful man. I think the most difficult thing is not coming every Friday evening and without fail having one of our greetings that we always used to do. It would normally start by you saying to me and brothers 'all right you men?' and I would respond 'all right lad.' I think among the things that I and certainly everyone will miss about you is your charisma, your charm and your glowing sense of humour. Of course, there's not many blokes as nice and as brilliant as my Granddad - Ted Clark. I have had special moments with each of my grandparents. I was glad in the early stage of your illness that I sat on the bed with you and had a really great chat, which I knew you enjoyed also. I used to love the conversations we used to have like that, they were really special. I could go through years' worth of happy memories with you, but you know those memories and you have , like I do, forever. Although you are not physically with the family amy more, you are still with us mentally and in our hearts and you will never leave that special place. Times will be hard without you and life will be different without our Grandad. I feel the need to tell you one more thing. To put your mind at rest, we will all be looking after Gran. You don't have to worry about that. I know you'll be watching over us anyway, but I just like to give you that extra comfort. Stay in touch. Your Grandson Daniel J Clark. p.s. from Dan's Aunty, Dan really does look after Gran, he's been a real star in visiting her regularly and taking her shopping when she needs it; even when she doesn't! Thank you Daniel from the bottom of my heart for being there for Granny. 'P' xxx
